Many of them even conceive this genre as a lifestyle in which ‘Trance Nation’ is their nationality, Clandestin pres. Full On Ibiza their capitol and Ferry Corsten their leader.

This last September 14th we got into the shoes of a Corsten follower to understand their passionate vision of Mondays at Space Ibiza. We realized that these are some basic rules to become an unconditional fan of Clandestin pres. Full On Ibiza.

#1 A great admirer arrives on time to their date: from 11:30pm we go into to the Sunset Terrace to admire the skills of Ramon Castells, the experienced DJ was put in charge of bringing rhythm to the dance floor.

#2 You know that the Terraza always opens at midnight: House South Brothers and then Henrik B were the first to step in the DJ booth to mix their favorite tracks. As expected, the Swede DJ spun remixes by Avicii and Axwell, colleagues of the same agency.

#3 You won’t dance, you will jump: there are no half measures here, the clubber comes to give it all from the start.

#4 With a lack of a leader, you will follow two: New World Punx, the duo formed by Ferry Corsten and Markus Schulz, returned for the second time this season to spin hits full of power.

#5 A true fan calls out hits from his favorite group: ‘Memories’, the latest hit by Corsten and Schulz, became the anthem of the party.

#6 That you will stay until the end: House South Brothers came back to surprise everyone with their performance influenced by Tech-house with touches of Rock.

#7 YOU WILL RETURN: buy your ticket for Clandestin pres. Full On Ibiza and be among the privileged who will enjoy an exclusive session by Paul Oakenfold, among many other artists this next Monday, September 21st.

Glitterbox: countdown to Closing

Glitterbox 28 8 by la skimal038Glitterbox 28 08 2015 9

With the end of the summer season fast approaching, it’s time to reflect on what has been an incredible few months of parties for Glitterbox at Space Ibiza, and to look ahead for what the Closing Parties have in store.

Glitterbox has enjoyed a revelatory sophomore year.  The opening party reviews were exemplary and things have only kicked on from there.  Glitterbox’s unique fusion of classic and contemporary soulful dance, backed by imaginative theming across everything from Mark Wardel’s glamorous promotional artwork to the arousing dance moves of Sink The Pink (one of a number of rotating crews), has fitted Space perfectly, like manicured hand to sequined glove. The Glitterbox crowds have happily swelled whilst the Friday night soundtrack continues to impress.

That’s in no small part down to line-up.  From the crunchy, anthemic highs of Todd Terry’s opening party set back in June to more recent travails with Fatboy Slim, shaking some serious disco booty, and Basement Jaxx, whose energetic double-act this August reached absolute fever pitch upon final play ‘Where’s Your Head At’, Glitterbox has constantly surprised and delighted.  It’s ‘anything goes’ flamboyance harks back to Ibiza’s earliest dancefloor beginnings; a mission statement warmly embraced by other star performers this season including Joey Negro, Roger Sanchez, Hercules And Love Affair, Purple Disco Machine, Norman Jay, Julio Bashmore, The Revenge, Kings of Tomorrow and so the list goes on....

As do the parties.  There is still life in Glitterbox 2015 yet.  Last night’s party was another triumph, with sets from The 2 Bears, Lovebirds and Opolopo all proving to be late season highlights. Next week, the penultimate party headlined by Soul Clap paves the way for a magnificent Closing Party on 25 September featuring, fittingly, Todd Terry once again, not to mention Gallic groove master Dimitri From Paris, edit king Greg Wilson, Horse Meat Disco and DJ PippiBuy your tickets for the end of the season and expect the crowd to leave screaming for more in 2016.

Another Sunday rolled on last night as Luciano and his Vagabundos gang delivered one more roaring show at Space Ibiza. With a tour schedule busier than ever these days, the Cadenza man was on fire in the Main Room, topping off a week of gigs that saw him play at Sonus Festival, Marbella and Tenerife.

The Warm Up came courtesy of Felipe Valenzuela B2B Dani Casarano: the guys collectively run Melisma and Drumma, two labels that have become a synonym of emotive soulful Minimal Techno, which count on artists like Ricardo Villalobos, Thomas Melchior, Fumiya Tanaka and Satoshi Tomiie among their contributors and avid supporters. Sophisticated with lush funky sounds and earthly Latin American undertones, their set truly captured the essential combination of tribal rhythms, perpetual swings and seductive musicality, creating a unique synergy with the audience.

Franco Cinelli’s blend of “Disco, Funk, House, Techno, Soul, Dub, Hypnosis, Technology, Love and Peace” struck a chord (or many) with the crowd, touching on classic Chicago sounds and a string of influences from his native Argentina.

Luciano’s 2-hour journey saw him mixing some 2005 era hits with his most recent productions, creating a stream of grooves and beats that shook the dance floor. Absolutely smashing.

In the Terrace, London’s Eli & Fur played a sexy mix of House numbers and Electro Disco influenced tunes, the highlights of their gig being their own hits “Seeing is believing” and “You’re so high”, with their suave vibes and lyrics.

House master Erick Morillo was back at Space Ibiza yesterday for another highly anticipated show this summer: the legendary DJ was on top form and playing a good bunch of tracks taken from his Subliminal label catalogue, causing a “seismic reaction” on his dance floor, as he likes to put it.

In the Sunset Room, Argy was on the decks all night long. The Rhodes born artist entertained the crowd with his eclectic selection of music, ranging from Bossa Nova and Jazz to Krautrock and African Trance.

Luciano, Kenny Glasgow (Art Department), Argy and many more DJ’s will blow your mind on 30th August. Buy your tickets for Sundays at Space with Lucianoand join in this amazing crew.

Kehakuma elrow at space ibiza 2015 08 22 05Kehakuma elrow at space ibiza 2015 08 22 06Kehakuma elrow at space ibiza 2015 08 22 01Kehakuma elrow at space ibiza 2015 08 22 03Kehakuma hosted the best electronic music coming from Cologne on Saturday, August 22nd. The Terraza of Space Ibiza became the European center – and probably the worlds – with the most advanced sounds with an outstanding ambassador, KOMPAKT label founder Michael Mayer.

KOMPAKT TOTAL and part of the record team held their third night of the season with the most satisfactory result. The German party began his journey at 1am with Barem on the decks. His rhythms based on the most powerful basses and his capabilities to make it simple provided the strength that was needed. In short, an addictive choice of tracks which were very difficult to disengage once the session ended.

At two o’clock in the early morning, the leader Michael Mayer arrived with Holland’s Patrice Bäumel. The clubbers waited impatiently for the first beats of the most desired back 2 back. Since the beginning it drew a soundscape that captivated everyone present. ‘Humm’ by Mayer and ‘The Vanishing’ by Bäumel, included in the KOMPAKT TOTAL 15 compilation released the same week of the event, were heard better than ever thanks to the Funktion One sound system.

Danny Daze was the last to contribute his great professionalism. The Latin American mixed stylistic influences ranging from the Techno of Detroit to Miami Bass getting the approval of a demanding audience. One of the key moments was when he dropped his latest remix of ‘Tell Me Why’ by Terranova feat. Stereo MC’s.

Moreover, the themed party ‘elrow Music’ traveled in time to the 70s. Disco balls, time period fashion and the always amazing show was the main focus in the Main Room. Toni Varga and De la Swing shared their unmistakable Techno-House melodies making the perfect warmup for Los Suruba.

The duo, special guests at Kehakuma last week, already knew how to treat the audience of Space Ibiza. You could say that the club is like a second home for Delmar and Álvaro who give themselves up for each of their sessions.

At elrow nobody stopped jumping until Paul Ritch arrived. The live performance of the Frenchman hinted at his most rhythmic Techno with touches of Minimal. His performance was a treat for fans who waited until 4:30am to enjoy their favorite DJ. And the wait was worth it. Finally, Marc Maya closed the party with the typical sound “made in elrow”.

In addition, And.Id, Igor Vicente and Alex Pott were the masters of KER at the Sunset Terrace on Saturday marked by KOMPAKT TOTAL, a party that returns for its last date on September 19th.

Buy your ticket for Kehakuma-elrowand dance with Groove Armada (DJ set) and Fritz Kalkbrenner next Saturday, August 29th at Space Ibiza.

Sandy Rivera – A soulful vision

Sandy Rivera 02 768x1024

With his new single ‘Burn So Deep’ currently riding high in the Traxsource Top 10, and an upcoming set at Space Ibiza for Glitterbox on Friday 4th September, here we caught up with Sandy for a quick chat.

Thanks for talking to us Sandy. You’ve got a Kings Of Tomorrow appearance coming up for Glitterbox in a couple of weeks... is there a big difference between a Sandy Rivera VS a Kings Of Tomorrow set?

Kings Of Tomorrow sets tend to be rarer. I guess I never really pushed that moniker as much before, at least in terms of pushing Kings Of Tomorrow sets. With Glitterbox and the sound it stands for, those gigs really allow me and anyone else to dig deep into the crates and play a set they perhaps aren’t able to at other nights. Kings Of Tomorrow was always somehow tied into my name and never separated. This is a great time for real House music and the soulful, Disco aspect of it all is more relevant these days. A Kings Of Tomorrow set would dive into some proper classics, something I could not really do before and really get into the Disco side of things. It's not far from what Kings Of Tomorrow is known for as you can hear with the new ‘Burn So Deep’ single.

Strong vocal tracks seem to be harder and harder to come by these days… do you think a lot of producers just don’t know how to work with them properly? What advice would you give to someone who wants to produce a killer vocal record?

If your set up is based on just a laptop, then you’re not set up for recording vocals. You’re not getting any practice at getting a good recording or dealing with artists who will sing for you. Lots of people send tunes out and wait for vocal to come back. That works sometimes. But if you want to be able to bring out the good qualities in a singer and help develop a song, then you need the singer in front of you. Then it becomes a real session where you are able to zone in for the best and help guide the vocalist in if necessary.

On the recording side of it, you can pick certain styles to record it. It becomes a real effort and at times very stressful, but that’s the best part of making the music. You can't get that original song all the time if you don't get involved in the writing. At the same time some vocalists are really good and don't need to be in the room with you. On that note, you better find some really good singers, writers and people who can come up with a hook. When April and I are in the studio, we work hard, we have a great vibe together and that comes out in the tunes.

Tell us about how your new track ‘Burn So Deep’ came about?

I always try a few different ideas, but I am always very specific in where I want the track to go. ‘Burn So Deep’ came out of a very specific idea. We had the lyrics and we just needed the perfect music to allow the vocal to flourish. With that in mind, we tried a Disco version in a different key to the original track, so re-recorded the vocals to the Disco mix and added a new hook. Once we had the final vocals done, I moved into doing the ‘Classic Soulful Mix’ and that became the package we released on Traxsource. We worked really hard on it, but the actual original version won’t be released as the two version we did just worked.

How do you decide what vocalists to feature on your records?

Most vocalists on all my past records I knew and have been in the room with them to write and record. Now we’re finishing some songs with singers I have not really met yet and I’m getting songs done where I am not there, though I much prefer to record the vocalist and be part of the session. It’s the only part of music that seems real to me. To only get sent the vocals as digital files is still hard for me to deal with.

What are your thoughts on the current House music scene?

A lot of the current stuff I really dig. There’s a big throwback to the 90’s scene going on which is cool when it’s done right; respect and knowledge. But so much has changed; fake seems to be the new cool. Ghost producers are now a must have for certain people who can’t actually make music and have a busy touring schedule. It really sucks how the audience love someone for the records they don’t make, but I guess that’s just the music business scene these days.

Fatboy Slim comes to Glitterbox

1glitterbox 14 08 20153glitterbox 14 08 20152glitterbox 14 08 2015

Last night at Space Ibiza, Fatboy Slim played the kind of set that comes along so infrequently you’ll be kicking yourself if you missed out. And with support from Tensnake, The Shapeshifters, John Morales, Simon Dunmore and The Mambo Brothers and Space packed to the rafters, it was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the season so far! Ahead of his set, we caught up with Norman to ask him about playing a different kind of set at his favourite club.

Hi Norman, thanks for talking to us. You’re going to be making your Glitterbox debut tonight....

I’m looking forward to it! It’s going to be nice to see Space from a different perspective. It’s great to be playing a different event at my absolute favourite club. For the past 10 years I’ve been committed to one thing there and you start to go through some of the same motions. Glitterbox will have a different crowd with a different atmosphere and that’s really cool.

Will you look to incorporate the Smile High Club at Glitterbox in some way?

Yes, I’m thinking about ways of bringing smiles on the night. One rule I do have concerns the moody strippers clubs often employ to dance in cages... I have a problem with that! You can check my rider for Glitterbox... it says that I won’t play if there are any moody strippers. That is, unless they’re transvestites or the dancers’ bodies are painted yellow with smileys all over! It’s all about the smiles!

Norman, what’s your view on Ibiza as clubbing entity in 2015?

The chasm between EDM and serious dance is wider than ever. There are two distinct tribes. But then people can chop and change and I quite like that. Some people want a bit of both scenes. Every year, of course, I say that the EDM bubble will burst. It still hasn’t but, today, EDM is so far away from what we started with dance music that many people want to head back to basics. As for the VIP thing, it does create a shite atmosphere but there has to be a necessary compromise. If a club is all VIP that’s not great, but if big brands are sponsoring good events with good music then a VIP space can be tolerated. Those events will still have real audiences. In some clubs the VIP area is kept away from everything anyway!

At the end of the day, there needs to be a logical conclusion to this kind of issue. I’m reminded of when I’ve taken [Fatboy party] Big Beach Boutique to Brazil. There the chasm between VIP and regular punter is dangerous...there’s a massive gap between rich and poor. But the VIP crowd has backed the event, and they’ve had a space right behind me close to the action...and my arse...whilst the main crowd has danced on the beach in front for free. That’s worked well I think!

You’re 51 – is there a shelf life for someone in your raucous line of work?

I have an endless supply of 18-year-olds to feed off of.  Their energy, when I’m DJing, keeps me motivated...keeps me feeling young.  I am a 51-year-old man, yes, but musically I’m still an irresponsible 18-year-old lunatic.  In this day and age dance music is absolutely massive and you can work all year round.  In 2014, I played 92 shows and loved it.  Sorting my tunes every week; preparing edits for my sets, and then sharing my experiences with everyone is a joy that keeps me going and going.

So there’s a lot more to come....

I won’t do the studio until I have the right idea but, as I say, who knows now?  As for the DJing, I’m happy to keep moving sideways rather than try and escalate all the time.  I can’t compete with the scale of things that acts like Swedish House Mafia have achieved, so there’s less pressure if I move sideways and just look for the gigs that interest and engage me.  My 14-year-old son played Cafe Mambo with me last summer, too, so God knows what beast I’ve unleashed there!

Vagabundos 09 08 2015 by Ana Ruiz 79Vagabundos 09 08 2015 by Ana Ruiz 63Vagabundos 09 08 2015 by Ana Ruiz 30

A piece of Techno history hit Space Ibiza last night as Luciano welcomed to Vagabundos Carl Craig, Derrick May, Stacey Pullen and Moodymann. The Detroit sound reigned supreme on the Main Room and Sunset Room’s floors, a unique opportunity for all the fans to savour the legacy of the Motor City’s music tradition.

Swiss young talent Ezikiel warmed up the Main Room in style before the legends took over, with the tracks from his The First EP (on Cadenza) sounding great. More to the point, a few tunes from his forthcoming release (due later this autumn on Luciano’s label again) were previewed on the night.

Planet E’s head honcho Carl Craig played a roaring B2B set with Stacey Pullen: the Jazz and Soul inspired Techno of Craig went down a storm along with Pullen’s trademark upbeat rhythms, leaving the crowd wanting for more after dropping some iconic numbers such as a contemporary rendition of Bug In The Bassbin and the evergreen Alive.

Luciano went on after Craig and Pullen: the Vagabundos ringleader’s unique Traktor 4 Decks style was taken to the next level last night, creating a huge wall of sound that blew everyone away, also thanks to the massive sound system exclusively provided for the occasion. An interesting fact: Luciano played a good bunch of tracks from his Basaec label, which were produced in his late teens and were sent to Derrick May’s imprint but turned down. Some 20 years on, those tracks sounded great, and it felt good to hear them at Space Ibiza on this unique night.

Derrick was on after Luciano, and closed off the Main Room in true Detroit fashion: peak time bombs, big room anthems and some hits from his Transmat label, topping it off with his very own Strings Of Life (recorded as Rhythim Is Rhythim), the milestone track that helped shape the Techno genre.

In the Sunset Room, gAs entertained the crowds with his Deep melodies and catchy grooves. His Split EP on Cadenza was released one week ago to enthusiastic reviews, and the guy lived up to that with a selection taking in the best of the last 20 years in House Music.

Chica Paula’s bold fusion between fairytale-like Ambient, House, Techno and Electropop proved to be a winning formula last night, and the people in the Sunset Room truly enjoyed her set as something different and quite unexpected.

Moodymann took the stage after her: to say that his appearance was highly anticipated is quite an understatement. The guy was in the mood to party as he unleashed a medley of Funk, Soul, Disco and classic House on the especially receptive crowd, his trademark use of reworked riffs, samples and grooves sending everyone crazy. A pleasure to have this artist at Space Ibiza, that’s for sure.

Luciano, Michel Cleis and Ilario Alicante, among other artists, will choose the best music on Sunday 16th August. Buy your tickets for Vagabundos at Space Ibiza
