Maya Jane Coles

2010 has certainly been the year that 23 year old Maya Jane Coles announced herself as one of the most talented up and coming artists in electronic music.
In the years preceding a steady output of techy cuts on labels such as Dogmatik and 1trax simmered away catching the attention of cluded up heads and savy A&R people alike. It was her debut EP on Franck Roger’s Real Tone though that ignited the fire of hype and boosted her profile on the global stage receiving heavy support from the house & techno elite. Aside from being hammered repeatedly on the worlds most happening dance floors ‘What They Say’ reached the number 1 spot on across the board; Beatport Deep House Chart No. 1, Tarxsource top download & Resident Advisors most charted tracks for October. It’s safe to say the release won the hearts and heads of fans and critics a like and a landmark year was topped off with a nomination for Best Breakthrough Producer nomination in the DJ Mag Best of British awards.

Not one to fall victim to the pitfalls of being one of the scenes ‘buzz names’, Maya has built on her flourishing reputation with a slew of gigs across Europe holding her own alongside world renounced DJs. So much so her schedule for 2011 is already jam packed with dates across Europe; London’s Fabric, Batofar, Watergate, not to mention iconic Glastonbury Festival, just a few of the destinations.

Maya’s productions take’s influence from a diverse range of musical styles and British – Japanese heritage. Her talents are by no means confided to realms of house and techno. Under the guise of her live dub/electronica outfit, ‘She Is Danger (alongside the multi-instrumentalist/singer Lena Cullen) she has remixed the likes of Massive Attack and Gorillaz and fans of her Dubstep Product under the name Noctural Sunshine include key tastemakers, Joy Orbison and Sucba to name a few.

As well as her trademark bass heavy approach Maya’s diversity as a producer also shines through in productions under her own name as well. Climbing high in Beatport’s ‘Chillout’ top 100 tracks from her stunning ‘Humming Bird’ EP on Hypercolour showcase her blissful vocals and ability to create songs and not just music for the dance floor. Forthcoming EPs on Anja Schneider’s Mobilee Records and for a number highly anticipated exclusives will no doubt elevate her status even further.

A bright talent with more than a couple of strings to her bow Maya Jane Coles is only just getting started.

Burnski

From ‘Autumn Days’ to tides of change, spring 2011 marks a season of renewal for Burnski. This exciting young man from the north-east coast of England has come a long way since he first stepped into the spotlight, and the coming months look set to bring another round of developments.

With one of the biggest selling releases in the history of 2020 Vision, Burnski was hailed as a prodigy upon first surfacing in the mid 00's. Since then, he has cemented a solid reputation as an artist erring on the deeper side of the dancefloor, releasing consistently excellent music on labels such as Poker Flat, Morris/Audio, Trapez, Dessous and Hot Creations – his release ‘Malibu’ for the latter being one of the standout tunes of 2010’s Ibiza season, finding its way into Mixmag’s end of year Top 100 tracks, Soul Clap’s ‘Social Experiment’ compilation for Number 19 Music, and Heidi’s Radio 1 show. A three week DJ tour in South America was the catalyst for changes both musical and personal in 2011. Inspired by new landscapes and sounds, Burnski has found a new energy and put it to good use in the studio, with a slew of new music on the way. ‘Sometimes Takes Longer’ is a 3-track EP which is scheduled for May release, courtesy of his old friends at Dessous. Prior to this he also adds a new association to his discography with the arrival of ‘Tropical Nights’, via the hotly tipped Real Tone label.

Furthermore, two compelling remixes round off act one this year – one for nu-school Detroit artist Kris Wadsworth, on the emerging One Records; and secondly for the legendary Robert Owens, courtesy of Back to Basics, the musical arm of the much-loved Leeds club night, where he holds a DJ residency.

A steadfast vinyl advocate and always armed with a bag of fresh music, Burnski’s DJ sets are intuitive and versatile, swinging between disco, deep house and Detroit tipped techno, his sets fulfil both the hedonistic and more focused minds in any crowd, and recently won him a nomiation in the ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ category in DJ Mag’s recent round of awards.

His style is now familiar at some of the most established clubs in Europe such as Fabric in London, Watergate in Berlin and The Loft in Barcelona, as well as further afield on the rooftops of Beirut, beaches of Melbourne and warehouses of New York and San Francisco – these just some of the places to benefit from his deep and groove led style.

Alex Celler

Acquiring success in the spring of 2009 with the release one of the year’s biggest dancefloor tracks, the last twelve months has seen an amazing run of productions from Alex Celler; his is a story of talent married to dedication and resulting in increasing success.

With its catchy hook and stylish lustre, ‘La Palma’ (Arearemote) was one of RA’s most charted tracks following its release and undoubtedly marked a turning point in Alex’s career. Follow-up releases ‘Trapped in Dub’ (Tuning Spork) and ‘North London Cutz’ (Cinematic) have helped rapidly cement an energetic and intense tech house sound full of swing, tribal rhythms & deep basslines. Meanwhile, the ‘Anthea & Celler’ bombs which arrived (with friend and fellow Londoner Anthea) on Cecille and Freak n Chic have afforded them both notable exposure and also the opportunity to take their partnership out on the road, courtesy of their back-to-back DJ sets. This is a partnership that is close to the hearts of both.

A Greek national by right but a Londoner by choice, Alex’s distinctive DJ style hints towards an obsessive attitude to crate digging – playing out an impressive blend of rare, old and modern tracks, his precise intuition for the right record on the dancefloor mirrors his own love of the party atmosphere.

Durable productions and mood-changing DJ sets have seen Alex feature as guest around the globe at respected parties at Ibiza's Underground, Amnesia and Space as well as others including Trouw (Amsterdam), Studio Martin (Bucharest), Arma 17 (Moscow) and at home in London - where he has become a main player in the city’s underground house scene, guesting regularly at Fabric and T-Bar. The coming summer season will see Alex play at the Space Opening Fiesta in Ibiza, and dish out releases on Arearemote, Cecille, air london and on Lauhaus’ increasingly slick label Soweso. Collaborations abound - with Lauhaus himself and the latest Cecille EP with Anthea.

Anthea

Anthea began to learn the art of DJ’ing back in 1997 and in the intervening years has come up through the ranks demonstrating a subtlety and sophistication that most of her male counterparts can only wish for.

Her keen sense of mood and groove, and sleekly funk-driven productions have seen fledgling efforts debuted on key labels Freak n’Chic, Cecille, Supplement-Facts and Tuningspork – the next year will bring releases on Supernature, and much more.

Like many producers, music had always had a strong presence throughout Anthea's childhood - jamming with her father in a home-based studio, her natural talent found its voice through an Amstrad 8 Track System and reams of tape, the young composer providing the keys to her Father’s bass.

These days, she has developed a distinctive style very much her own – somewhere lodged between house and techno; always deep, tribal and bassline fuelled. Word of her sleek and stylistically funk-driven sound has not only landed her a coveted Ibiza Voice podcast, but steadily spread across Europe.

Her long held love of the studio clearly shows in her collaborations with close friend Alex Celler, and with Werner Niedermeier as JC Freaks. Her alliance with the former shows more than a little musical chemistry between the two – the hit Caedmon Loop stormed dance floors to become one of Ibiza’s best-loved anthems of 2009, whilst work with the latter has supplied several classy EP’s on labels such as Phonica, Mojuba and offshoot Wandering – proving that (if we were in any doubt!) here is a lady who knows her craft.

Having built a stellar reputation as arguably the most in-demand female DJ in London, 2009 saw Anthea step up to a deserved platform. And with an emphasis on creating, not imitating, she has laid more than solid foundations for 2010, and beyond that a neat and inspired future.

Adam Shelton

Continuing over the last twelve months to champion music that is true to itself, Adam Shelton has an unshakeable focus on quality underground house. His debut EP ‘Air Trax’, due in February 2011 on air london, is part of a relentless effort to sketch out his own definition of authenticity. From sultry and atmospheric sounds to the acid-drenched and techy, the EP embodies the energy of his current musical course.

His skills, versatility and range as a DJ have seen him guest at some of the world’s best clubbing spots including Panorama Bar, Cocoon, Glastonbury Festival, Space in Ibiza and most recently Harry Klein in Munich and London clubbing mecca Fabric – but as a producer there is much on offer.

His work with sparring partner Subb_an brings a raw and retro-funk sound, which is clearly demonstrated on their joint EPs ‘It’s Time’ and ‘The Muzik’. Similarly, their edits under the S.A.S. moniker have increasingly found notoriety as the insider’s weapon of choice. ‘In The Candy Store’ has featured prominently on discerning dancefloors worldwide, spun by Seth Troxler, Craig Richards, Heidi, Lee Burridge and Lee Curtiss, amongst others. Meanwhile the early 90’s feel of ‘Give it to You’ perfectly demonstrates an insight into the US house-loving side of Adam’s taste.

Entering its second year, his label One Records is a stronghold for emerging UK talent, having showcased the sounds of Seelie, Jordan Peak and Death on the Balcony alongside more established, but no less fresh, heads like Geddes, Burnski and Jozif. Additionally trans-Atlantic aficionados Shaun Reeves and Kris Wadsworth have recently contributed. Dreamt up with long time partner Subb-an at The Rainbow Pub, the label aims to encapsulates the vibe of artists and crowds that Adam has connected with most. More than just his literal home, The Rainbow has become a meeting place for likeminded innovators, upstarts and party people from all corners of the country.

One of the UK’s most diverse and talked about small venues, The Rainbow is fertile ground for Adam to experiment with a wide range of musical styles, not least at his own party Below, now in its sixth year. The coming year will see Adam release on labels 2020 Vision, Magicbag, Illusion and Smoke City, as well as a continued dedication to One Records. With this inexorable drive, it can truly be said that despite having already delivered a great deal, we have still only skimmed the surface of Adam’s talent.

Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano

Two notable personalities with a single goal: to entertain as many people as possible with their deep and funky house sound.

From the moment they entered the DJ profession, they agreed to do something serious with their common passion: House Music! Quickly after their first gig together Sunnery and Ryan established themselves as top DJs. Besides performing all over the globe, they are very busy in their Amsterdam studio. May 2008 saw the release of debut track ‘Pina’, just 4 weeks later, dance floor cracker ‘Lift U Up’, feat. Melvin Reese & Chappell saw light. Then things went very fast, their inspirational, upfront release The Desert’, was released via D.O.N.S.’s Kingdom Kome Cuts imprint, Steve Angello scooped up ‘Traffic’ and ‘Snitch’ for release on his Size Records label and they made several remixes for the likes of Sander Kleinenberg (‘This Is Our Night’) and Kaskade (‘Dynasty’).

In February 2010, Sunnery and Ryan launched their ‘Amazone Project’ event in the Heineken Music Hall Amsterdam. 5.500 fans came to join the SJ-RMhype and witnessed an exclusive 5-hour-set. The Amazone Project compilation landed on the #2 spot in the Dutch charts.

The SJ-RM journey continues in 2010, with Sunnery & Ryan debuting at the prestigious Sensation event in the 50.000 cap. Amsterdam Arena on 3rd of July and playing Pacha Ibiza alongside Swedish House Mafia.

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – the energetic duo who match soulful vocals with fast pumping House. Their skill lies in the ability to build a track, drop it, pull in the next, sample soul-pleasing vocals, then drop another so smoothly that their whole set feels like a constant upward progression. Another skill is their ability to read the crowd and give them exactly what they want.

Rank 1

They’re one of Europe’s most established, respected dance acts, having been catapulted to stardom by their debut release ‘Airwave’. In the 9 years that have followed they’ve continued to pack out the CD wallets of world’s A-list spinners with speaker-spankers that have included ‘Such is Life’, ‘Symfo’ and ‘Life Less Ordinary’… In 2009 they unleashed ‘L.E.D. There Be Light’ - a track that was quickly snapped up by ID&T as the anthem for that year’s Trance Energy event. As DJs they create floor-quakes before thousands of fans, at clubs, arenas and festivals every single weekend. They are Piet Bervoets & Benno de Goeji… and they’re Rank 1. Piet & Benno – Pre Rank 1: Embarking on his production career in 1995, Piet banded together with Carlo Resoort to produce the proto tech-trance hit ‘The Simarillia’. He continued to build the pressure in 1997 under the pseudonym R.O.O.S., creating the contagious riff-monster ‘Instant Moments’.

In a studio not that far away, Benno was laying the ground work for his future A-list co-production collaborations with an at-the-time unknown Tiësto. As Kamaya Painters they produced the scene-setting trance classic ‘Endless Wave’, but fate was already conspiring to bring Benno and Piet together…

‘Airwave’ – Rank 1’s Year One: After a chance introduction at a party in the spring of 1997, the pair recognised much common musical ground and decided to work together. As the Dutch trance dawn rose up over Europe, the pair found themselves faultlessly positioned at its epicentre to reign. Championed by fellow fast-risers Armin van Buuren, Tiësto and Ferry Corsten, in 1999 the stadium-sized sound of ‘Airwave’ sent out an audio shockwave across the continent. It proved to be such a hit that just 12 months later‘Airwave’ had been released, incredibly, in over 40 countries – jumping into the Top 10 in the UK and becoming the first Dutch track to top the European Dance Chart.

The Rank 1 Singles: Working at the pace of roughly one floor-carnivore a year, Rank 1 followed-up with ‘Such is Life’ (2001), ‘Awakening’ (taken from their debut album ‘Symsonic’ - both 2002), ‘It’s up To You’ (2003), ‘Beats @ Rank-1 Dotcom’ (2004) and ‘Opus’/’Top Gear’ (2005). After a year’s production break they returned to the fray in 07 with two monster collaborations: ‘Life Less Ordinary’ (in tandem with Alex M.O.R.P.H.) and the ‘This World is Watching Me’, co-produced with Armin. In 2009 Rank 1 became the ‘goto’ men for event anthems, remarkably producing them for not one, but two world-class festivals. In February ‘L.E.D. There Be Light’ became the wildly-popular, Beatport-smash anthem for Trance Energy, while ‘Symfo’ was selected to define Poland’s colossal Sunrise festival.

The Rank 1 Remixes: Rank 1 also has an estimable remix-o-graphy to their name. Ferry Corsten, Push, Cygnus X, Delirium, Marcel Woods, Mr Sam, Ronald van Gelderen, Angelic and Ayumi Hamasaki have all been given Rank 1’s studio re-touch.

Piet the DJ, Benno the Producer: Rank 1 now has two distinct branches to its operation. Benno is in charge of all the Rank 1’s production elements. He co-produced all the tracks on Armin van Buuren’s 2008 long-player ‘Imagine’ and has already commenced work on the next one. Piet meanwhile takes the role of the globe-trotting DJ, spinning at tent-pole events like Castle Dance in Russia & Dance Valley in his native Holland, as well as Rank 1’s regular Ibiza sessions. In 2009 Rank 1 found themselves re-entering the DJ Magazine Top 100 at No.77.

Rank 1 LIVE: Over recent years, Rank 1 has increasingly come together on stage for their Live performances. They became the first live act to perform at Sensation and famously forced the closure of doors of Trance Energy’s main arena (when 25,000 clubbers packed it out to hear them play). Their kinship with the biggest event in trance music is widely-known and they are the only act to have rocked Trance Energy 3 times! Outside of that Rank 1 has continued to thrill crowds live at some Europe’s bestknown festivals including Mystery Land, Sunrise & Nature One.

Rank 1 – The Mindset: When it comes to interviews, Benno & Piet are, in essence the ‘Daft Punk’ of Trance! Now famously reclusive, they don’t like the term ‘success’ as it implies they have already arrived.

Instead, on the few occasions they do speak, they prefer to speak in terms of ‘progression’ & ‘perfection’.

Ultimately though they are far happier to let their music do all the talking.

Menno de Jong

Master of numerous music industry disciplines, Menno de Jong has already etched as many notches on the dance tree as someone twice his age. He has recorded for some of Europe’s biggest Trance labels and is the founder of lauded Dutch independent imprint, Intuition Recordings. A bona-fide Podcast pioneer, he’s produced and presented the widely-syndicated, much-downloaded Intuition Radio show for the last 5 years.

In 2009 he went back into DJ Magazine’s Top 100 Chart for the fourth successive year (at No. 56) and near-simultaneously took the No.13 position in TranceAddict’s Biggest 250 Trance DJs Poll. With his “Trance in the broadest sense” DJ and production mindset he is, without question, the next challenger to the Dutch dance throne.

Born into a musical family it was a natural step for Menno to start experimenting with the array of equipment gathered in his father’s studio. In 2004 he launched his production career in propitious fashion when his very first track ‘Guanxi’ was inked to Anjunabeats. The devoted music workaholic, Menno has continued to summon one rapturous moment after another from his studio. ‘Magma’/‘Momentum’ and ‘Sjamaan’ were released on Fundamental (in 2005 & 2007 respectively), while ‘Tundra’ (2005) and ‘Nolthando’/ ‘Solid State’ (2007) have provided rocket fuel for his own label Intuition Recordings.

Following a short break to graduate from university he continued to build his production profile in 2009 with ‘Last Light Tonight’. A re-collaboration with Leon Bolier, it was marked up by DJ Magazine as having “a sonically-perfect production” and as being “unquestionably a track to seek out”. On the remix side, he has re-formed tracks for (amongst others) The Thrillseekers, Karen Overton & Mark Otten and most recently rewired Alex M.O.R.P.H.’s ‘No Regrets’ to skyscraping effect.

Menno began mixing at a very early age, but at the age of 17 he threw himself into DJ’ing full-force. In the last four years he has successfully scaled the upper echelons of the DJ hierarchy, with four successive positions in the Top 100. De Jong has played at clubs and events that are themselves virtually interchangeable with the phrase ‘Electronic Dance Music’. Inside his home country Mysteryland, TT Festival and naturally Trance Energy have all heard his auditory power and witnessed his highly-refined mixing style, as have Nature One in Germany, Electric Daisy Carnival in LA, Loveparade San Francisco, Amnesia in Ibiza, WMC in Miami and the UK’s Gatecrasher & Creamfields festivals. In 2009 he became Godskitchen’s Global Gathering world tour resident; a position that saw him smash GK festivals in Poland, Belarus, Russia, the Ukraine and ultimately the UK.

He has DJed with some of the biggest names in the electronic dance scene and is as much at home spinning with Trance luminaries like Armin van Buuren & Tiësto as he is with house and techno dons like Deadmau5 and Carl Cox. With his 100watt smile, energetic style and omnipresent audience contact, he continues to share his passion for evocative melodies and dance-floor decimating beats with clubbing audiences worldwide.

To the Dance music industry Menno is nearly as well known as a radio DJ as he is a club one. Forming the leading-edge of the internet radio and podcast phenomenon, he launched his Intuition Radio Show back in early 2005.

The weekly episodes rapidly became required listening for the internet’s music-hungry hoards, with Menno laying down the very best in Dance music. Following a short spell as a Monthly, Intuition returned to its weekly fixture in the summer of 2009, heralded on the first Wednesday each month by a special XXL edition. Accessible via the internet on DI.fm & ETN.fm it can also be caught on the airwaves through (amongst others) the Dutch radio station XFM. It also notably became one of iTunes’s first Podcast download click-smashes – a position it retains to this day.
