How was it playing Carl Cox at Space?I love Space and I love the Carl Cox party – it’s one of the best parties on the island, if not the best! There’s always a good vibe and good fun! You played on Space Terraza, what kind of set did you play? I played a groovy set, quite energetic, with lots of new tracks that are coming out on my label Snatch! You are also playing Space in September for Come Together, Space’s most eclectic night with DJ’s from all genres. Which artists do you like or listen to outside of house and techno music? Well I used to listen to a lot of different kinds of music. I’m just getting into the indie electronic genre at the moment. I used to listen to a lot of rock back in the day, so I really like to widen my musical culture, and my parents used have a big collection of 70’s funk and Motown records. Your own music is very eclectic, having released on a lot of different labels and done remixes for artists from’s Derrick Carter to Usher. Is there any particular style that’s really inspiring you or coming through in your music right now? Well everything that is really crossover and I’m doing a few crossover experiments on my new album as well. I’ve just finished a track with Fatboy Slim and Beardyman and I did a track with Ramon Tapia. He is usually very techno/tech-housey but we did a very crossover kind of tune. So I really like experiments because they produce the most exciting kind of things. You have played at many different parties in Ibiza, what do you like about playing here? Well of course the vibe is really clubby and when people go to a club they know what to expect so that’s something that I like. I just played last week at the Jamiroquai afterparty and it was cool. Usually when you play after a live set people don’t care about what you’re playing and leave after the concert. But because it was Ibiza and people know the music they stayed and it was good fun. And when you have some time off in Ibiza what do you do or where do you go? Well there’ll usually be some DJ’s or parties I really want to check out. Most of the time I like to hang out with friends and just chill, spend the whole day on the beach and have an amazing meal in some very underground spots. Your EP ‘The Latin American Trip’ was released recently, what was the inspiration behind it? Well I made tracks back in the day with South American samples and actually Carl Cox is still playing a few on them. Well it’s just fun and very groovy and it’s getting a lot of response in South America as well of course, because they really understand the samples. It’s just a very cool summer EP. What other releases or projects are you currently working on? Well I have a MIxmag cover mount CD in September and then I’ve got my album almost ready with a few collaborations. I did a track with Chromeo and a couple with FatBoy Slim and a few with Nic Fanciulli. Its going to be a very different album, more crossover, and it will hopefully be released before next summer. And then of course touring all around. What programs are you using for producing / DJ’ing? I DJ with memory cards, so I’ve got this software called Record Box on the Pioneer CDJ’s. So I can use the MP3’s on the memory cards, like Tracktor, but without a laptop. So you can make a very cool live set with loops and stuff without having the hassle of using a laptop. To produce I use Digital Live because I travel a lot and I’m hardly in the studio and I’m spending a lot of time in airports. I did my whole album while I was travelling so it’s definitely a good solution for producers. And then I go to the studio because I have all my analogue equipment. But the most time consuming part is when you are arranging or editing a track and I can do that while I travel so it’s good. Your label Snatch! Records is now just over a year old. Does it take up a lot of your time? And how do you balance that with producing your own tracks and DJ’ing? It’s hard work of course but I have the help of my label manager and he’s helping me a lot with the schedule and the logistics. I just get connected with the producers and choose the tracks. It’s good for me to just focus on the music and after one year we are doing well, we have plenty of new fans and they are rating the label as one of the leaders of the new school house scene. Are there any fresh, new talents that we should watch out for? There’s plenty of young and very talented producers from Italy and I’m trying to push a lot of Italian talents. There’s definitely a bunch of people it’s worth watching out for like Pirupa. He’s got a very good EP coming out on Snatch! in October and this new guy from Naples called John Made who is really good as well. |
