Inerview Miss Kittin

You’ve been associated with We Love for some time now, what do you think of the party this year?
I think it's even better than last year. To keep this level of quality for so long is a very exhausting challenge. I know they had up and downs, their work has been difficult with the crisis, but they are back on track, and they do it with so much love, they deserve it.

You had a bit of a French theme going on when you played the Terrace in July. How was it playing alongside Dan Ghenacia and Ivan Smagghe?
Of course, a huge pleasure. I was actually honoured they would think about such a line up. It's not really about the fact we are French, but friends first of all, respect each other a lot, and share a certain idea of DJ’ing. We definitely represent a particular aspect of the French scene.

Would you say French dance artists have had a big influence on your sound throughout your career?
Laurent Garnier has. We grew up with him, his magical sense of the dancefloor, his wonderful attitude in the business as well. Such an example. He also is the perfect eclectic DJ. So yes, he surely influenced me to play diverse, open up my ears and never be afraid of playing what I like, without following the trends. Otherwise, there's not many French "dance" artists besides Daft Punk. I can't really connect to the French Touch 2.0 as journalists called it. The Hacker and I were surely more influenced by French new Wave from the 80's but it's too old and retro to be noticed!

As well as DJ’ing, you are a producer, songwriter, singer…is there one aspect which you are particularly focusing on or enjoying at the moment?
DJ’ing is my roots and my constant activity. That's also how I earn my living, let's be honest about it. But on the side, I write music when I feel like it. I have periods where I write a lot, then nothing for a while. I only go in the studio when I have an idea. But I need a lot of free time outside the music world to nourish my inspiration, otherwise I would have stopped. Nowadays, I have a full album finished ready to be released since a year, and I must say I've been quite lazy to start the process, because I know I have to do promotions and put a live act and a tour together. It's a lot of work... But once the right time will come, I'll be happy to sing and play live again, and leave the decks for a while.

In terms of productions what are you currently working on and are there any releases lined up?
We will tell you in time! But yes, the album is ready.

A lot of people know you as Miss Kittin & The Hacker. Are there any plans to work together again in the future?
We surely will, but never know when. Let's hope it won't be in ten years time! The Hacker also has his solo album to finish, so it's not gonna be soon.

I often hear people say it’s easier for female DJ’s to be successful, what’s your opinion on that?
I don't think so. If it was, we wouldn't be so few. It's an easy thing to say because in life in general, the world is more critical with women. We have to go through stuff like "Oh, she has gigs because she is cute etc...". Maybe yes, some girls do have gigs because they are women, but to make a career, it's another story. We have to show more to be respected long term.

You’re playing a rather unique event in London soon, ‘A Night With…’, where one DJ performs for the entire evening. Are you excited about the party and what can we expect from a night with Miss Kittin?
Of course it's exciting. You have 8 hours to express yourself, observe the audience and react exactly on the moment. You have to expect to be surprised, the same way I'll be surprised myself. I want to be moved by this experience, the same way people expect to be moved.

How do you prepare for such a booking? To what extent will you plan the 8 hour set?
I usually work in my hotel room before the gig, just to make the last adjustment. The excitement sometimes give me ideas, where to find old records I didn't think about. I also listen to a lot of promos and buy new stuff during the week. All my record collection is in my computer so I have a lot of good stuff in stock... I know I will keep the audience fresh, swinging from pumping moments to more introspective ones, not to be tired on the dancefloor.

And if you could choose who would play the next party, who would you like to spend ‘A Night With...’?

Good question. Laurent Garnier? He would be challenging. We played together before but never on such a long period of time.
