Interview Groove Amada

groove armadaGroove Armada, the British electronic music duo, has been on the scene for over 15 years, and continue to produce and record music as well as host semi-regular club nights in London. They are actually on tour with their new “Red Light” show, catch them at Space Ibiza on September 11th and 18th.

So guys you are back in Ibiza this summer for a residency on the Space Terrace, what have the We Love parties been like so far?
They've been great. Working our new Red Light show on the terrace has been a lot of fun.

Yes your Red Light show is new for summer 2011. First of all, could you talk us through the light concept that started with your ‘Black Light’ album last year?
Well I can try. Black Light was the livest album we've made. There was no real 'concept' behind the name, it just made sense at the time. We then did White Light which was Black Light done live, and now we're at Red Light - which is very much a return to us doing music rooted in the clubs – the only common thread is there's always a laser involved.

What’s the setup of the new Red Light show? How does it work and interact with the music?
Well we wanted to bring a bit more of a show element to what we did, than just two blokes with laptops and CDs. After all the effort we'd put into our live shows over the years that would have felt like a bit of a betrayal. So we're DJing but with loads of lovingly prepared edits of GA trax and music we love, but we're running the lighting, the visuals, the lasers and if we have one the smoke machine too.

So could you sum up the total A/V clubbing experience?
Warehouse music stadium style.

There is of course new material as part of the show and there’s a series of EP’s being released?

Yes yes. First one in a week or so, then there's going to be one every couple of months. We've been super focused on the show of late so it'll be good to put some studio time in now.

The track ‘The Pleasure Victim’ is already getting a lot of positive feedback online, since being featured on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show. Was there any particular inspiration behind it or how did come about?
Not really. The vocal is an old sample of a ten city classic, then it grooved from there.

Aside from touring the Red Light show are you currently spending much time in the studio working on other productions?
Well we're both really committed to the Red Light project at the moment,I think that’s keeping us quite fulfilled. We both have a couple of aliases but I'd rather keep a sense of mystery about those.

You have been working and playing together now as Groove Armada for over 15 years. How has the relationship developed over that time?

It’s got worse and worse and now we're barely speaking ;)
